The fallen span of the southbound lane on the Grand Canal Bridge in Taji, northwest of Baghdad, floats in the water underneath the bridge. The damage was caused by a vehicle-born improvised explosive device which was detonated on August 14, 2007. There has been excessive corrosion to the banks of the river because of the incident. A local Iraqi construction company, Rownaq al Mas, will break down the massive span and remove it from the canal in smaller pieces. The workers are on schedule to have all repairs to the bridge completed by the end of this year.
