FORWARD OPERATING BASE HAMMER, Iraq – The Jurf Nadaf SoI notified the CA Team A 912, from Knoxville, Tenn., attached to the 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, of a large cache.
The cache consisted of two 122 mm high-explosive projectiles, two 125 mm HE projectiles, three 122 mm empty projectile casings and 21 82 mm inert mortar rounds.
Capt. James Rivenberk, from Murfreesbourough, Tenn., Calif., Team A leader, said this was the first time his team had operated in the Jurf Nadaf area after taking over from another 489th CA team.
"The area is fairly safe, as safe as it can be," Rivenberk said. "With the Sons of Iraq identifying caches, it improves security for everybody, not just coalition forces."
Near the small town of al Lej, southeast of Baghdad, Company B, 1-15 Inf. Regt. Soldiers secured a cache found by the SoI. The cache consisted of a 120 mm high explosive tank round, a 60 mm mortar round and two 82 mm illumination mortar rounds. Both caches were disposed of by an explosive ordnance disposal team from the 789th Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), from Fort Benning, Ga.
The 1-15 Inf. Regt. is assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Benning, Ga., and has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since March.
