COMBAT OUTPOST CLEARY, Iraq – A former detainee was released to his family members outside a local mosque in Al-Wahida June 24.
In the spirit of reconciliation and respect for the rule of law, local leaders worked closely with coalition forces on the release of the former detainee. After a six month detention, he was reintegrated back into his community.
"We are happy to have him back with the family," said the individual's uncle through an interpreter. "There is a lot of work to do with improving our area; so he should be able to find work easily."
Those chosen for release are not guilty of serious, violent crimes, such as bombing, torture, kidnapping or murder. Additionally, all have admitted their crimes, renounced violence and pledged to be good citizens of a democratic Iraq.
Their cases are carefully reviewed on an individual basis by a combined board of Iraqi and coalition officials, and decided in light of Iraq's ongoing efforts to create peace, stability and a brighter future for its citizens.
