KABUL, Afghanistan — International Security Assistance Force soldiers killed a Taliban commander who was intimately involved in the procurement, construction and emplacement of improvised explosive devices Oct. 29, 2008 following a successful ISAF operation.
Mullah Ziauddin died as a result of injuries which occurred during a strike against him conducted by ISAF forces in an area to the south of Lashkar Gah. Ziauddin is reported to have been linked with other senior Taliban members and to have controlled forces responsible for attacks on ISAF and Afghan security forces. This successful operation follows the capture of another suspected Taliban commander, Mullah Mashar, in the same area.
He was also believed to be associated with the group responsible for the kidnapping of 160 Afghan engineers and labourers in Helmand province in September.
ISAF spokesman, Brigadier-General Richard Blanchette, believes that his death will have a significant effect on the Taliban's ability to conduct operations in Helmand province and their intimidation campaign in Musa Qala.
"This will have an immediate impact on Taliban attempts to continue their vicious tactics in Musa Qala," he said.
"With the death of Mullah Ziauddin, there will be one less insurgent threatening the peace and security of Afghanistan; the insurgency will never win. As a growing number of insurgents have come to realise, it is time for them to choose peace."
