KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan national police assisted, by coalition forces, killed the top militant commander in Andar district, Ghazni province, May 20, while conducting a search of his compound.

Abdul Baki, who was heavily armed with rifles and hand grenades, attacked the Afghan police with small-arms fire as they entered his residence. One officer received a gunshot wound to the pelvis, but was able to return fire and shoot Baki. Although wounded, Baki continued to fire upon the ANP. Other officers were quickly able to effectively neutralize the militant commander.

Baki commanded a cell of 20-30 fighters who facilitated multiple direct attacks against coalition and Afghan forces and indirect attacks against Afghan government officials. The ANP discovered 50 voter registration cards at Baki's residence that he had stolen from villagers in order to prevent them from participating in the upcoming August election.

The wounded ANP was immediately treated and evacuated to a coalition medical facility.

No other ANP, coalition force or non-combatant casualties were reported.

"The ANP's termination of this commander will significantly decrease the ability of the militants in Ghazni to carry out their crimes against humanity. Preventing villagers from voting is absolutely despicable and will not be tolerated," said a coalition spokesman.
