KABUL, Afghanistan — One militant was killed and three suspects were detained during operations early this morning in Helmand province when Afghan and coalition forces carried out an operation to disrupt Taliban operations in southern Afghanistan.

Near Lashkar Gah in Nawa-I-Barak Zayi District, approximately 140 kilometers southwest of Kandahar, the combined force patrolled to a rural village after intelligence sources indicated militants were located at a compound in the village.

Afghan forces used verbal commands to prompt residents to exit peacefully. Occupants complied with instructions except for one man who fled a building toward a security element. In an effort to stop the man, the security element employed non-lethal means culminating in firing of warning shots. Undeterred, the man maneuvered on the force and was killed in the engagement.

The compound was searched without further incident with Afghan forces fostering cooperation between the combined force and approximately 20 adults and children present. Forces detained three men suspected to be involved in militant activities in Helmand.
