KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces detained nine suspects in Helmand province overnight June 8, during a mission to disrupt the al Qaida and Taliban networks operating in southern Afghanistan.

Near the village of Amim Kalay in Nahr-e-Saraj District, approximately 15 kilometers north of Lashkar Gah, a combined force conducted an assault to capture a senior Taliban commander responsible for operations across Helmand province.

A security element pursued the men, using non-lethal force to subdue them.Forces detained two suspects for further questioning, along with seven other men who remained on the compound. The Identities of the detained are being confirmed.

As the combined force prepared to depart with the detainees, enemy forces fired on them from a line of trees a short distance away. Afghan and coalition forces returned fire and called for precision fires to suppress the attack.
