KABUL, Afghanistan — Four International Security Assistance Force service members were killed today, Aug. 25, as a result of an improvised explosive device detonation that occurred in southern Afghanistan.
"It is with great sorrow that I learned about this terrible attack and I wish to convey my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of these four determined ISAF comrades," said Brigadier-General Eric Tremblay, ISAF spokesperson.
"They were struck while patrolling in one of the most violent areas of Afghanistan. We shall always be proud of their courage and sacrifice as they fell fighting for the good of Afghans living in the south."
Navy Chief Petty Officer Brian Naranjo confirmed that the service members were from the United States.
ISAF is a key component of the international community's engagement in Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan authorities in providing security and stability and creating the conditions for reconstruction and development.
