CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq —Soldiers from the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 515th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, of the New Mexico National Guard, were awarded a combat patch at a ceremony here Sept. 5.
During the ceremony, leaders placed the 16th Sustainment Brigade patch on the right arm of their Soldiers. Nearly 120 Soldiers earned the combat patch, which is awarded to Soldiers who serve in a combat environment.
"It feels I am serving my country in the best possible way that I can," said Sgt. Cimarron Gonzales, property book non-commissioned officer, from Belen, N.M. "I'm good serving with the soldiers that I came to Iraq with."
"I'm proud to wear the combat patch as the guidon bearer. I will wear it as I go from this unit to another," said Spc. Gilbert Murillo, guidon bearer, HHC, 515th CSSB.
For the leaders of the unit, it was a reminder of the mission at hand.
"It is an honor to wear the patch of the 16th Combat Sustainment Brigade and to unite our unit's history forever," said Command Sgt. Maj, Paul T. Martinez, command sergeant major, 515th CSSB.
Col. Martin B. Pitts, Commander, 16th Sust. Bde., gave the Soldiers a brief history lesson about the 16th Sust. Bde and described the meaning of the patch to them. He also explained that the histories of the 16th and 515th are now intertwined.
The 515th CSSB is serving a 12-month tour and will redeploy next spring.
