MOSUL, Iraq — Iraqi federal police have continued to refine and improve their tactical procedures months after the withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from cities across the country. In operations throughout west Mosul the Mosul Brigade of the 3rd Federal Police Division have been incorporating and refining new tactics into their operations.
In an operation Sept. 17, the Mosul Brigade conducted a cordon and search operation in the Al Rissala neighborhood of west Mosul. During this operation Mosul Brigade set up a tactical command post to assist in command and control of the operation.
"This is the best I have seen," said Maj. Darren King, Operations officer for the Mosul Brigade Transition Team, about the level of sophistication that the Mosul Brigade had put into their tactical command post.
Brig. Gen. Jawad, Operations officer for Mosul Brigade, walked King through the layout of their tactical command post that they had set up earlier that morning. Jawad showed him the maps and communications equipment they had set up and how they were using it to help them conduct their mission.
This was a dramatic step forward in the operations of Mosul Brigade. With their team of U.S. advisors, Mosul Brigade had realized the value in operating tactical command posts like the one used in the cordon and search operation of the 17th.
This operation was run much smoother than previous operations because of the assets and training they have been implementing in there tactical command posts, said Jawad.
With a tactical command post Mosul Brigade has a central site to brief incoming commanders on the current situation, a place to house insurgents detained in the operation, and a command and control node where they can allocate units where need during operations.
Improving the federal police's tactical command post operations is something that the Transition Team has been working on since last April, stated King. The Mosul Brigade is making marked improvements in every aspect of their operations.
According to King, Mosul Brigade is increasingly using maps and radio communications to coordinate with subordinate units across the city, and sharing valuable intelligence with other federal police units. Communication and intelligence are areas that Mosul Brigade have put greater emphasis on since U.S. forces pulled out of the city on June 30. These capabilities help increase the success rate of their operations.
Operations, like the cordon and search in Al Rissala, provide Mosul Brigade an opportunity to continue to refine their operations in order to improve security for the citizens of Mosul. With improving capabilities comes a desire to become even more efficient.
"We will get even better in future missions," said Jawad, "we are constantly getting better."
