BELLE CHASE, La. — Tariq Hanna is a man of many talents. A self-described fan of fighter jets, he designed a one-of-a-kind replica of an F-15 for the Louisiana National Guard's 159th Fighter Wing's family day at Naval Air Station — Joint Reserve Base in New Orleans, Dec. 6.
"This was a project of passion," said Hannah. He explained that it started as this little idea and then it became a challenge.
"This was something I had never done before." The project took Hanna approximately eight hours to complete.
Hanna was asked by Louisiana Guardsman Senior Airman Charlie Fenton to bake a unique cake for family day. Fenton, of the 159th Aircraft Maintenance Support Squadron, is new to the wing and figured that his friend would bake a good treat for the families.
"This was a way for me to say thank you very much," said Hanna. "You put your life on the line so that I can continue playing with cakes."
"I am grateful that a man with such a tremendous talent gave up his time and energy to honor my airmen with this cake," said Roy V. Qualls, 159th Fighter Wing commander. "As Guardsmen, we live and work in the local communities, and it's extremely gratifying to know that there are people out there like Tariq who support us to this degree."
Hanna said that speaking to Qualls was a bit surreal for him. "You fly an F-15 and protect me, and you're impressed with a little F-15 cake that I baked?"
Hanna is not only a chef at New Orleans' own Sucre Bakery, he is also part owner of the establishment. He has been recognized locally and nationally for his creations.
"This was a moving experience for me," he said.
