    KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan-international security force conducted a search and detained one insurgent near Sar Banader in the Garmsir District of Helmand province today after intelligence information indicated militant activity.

    An ISAF patrol found a weapons cache in the Nad-e Ali District of Helmand province today. The cache contained 5 kilograms of home-made explosives, an 81mm mortar round, two 60mm mortar rounds, three 60mm tail fins, six rocket-propelled grenade motors, an 105mm artillery round, six RPG cones, pressure plate devices, command-pull switches and other IED-making materials.

    In Kandahar last night, a joint force searched a compound in the Sanjeray area, in the Zharay District, after intelligence information indicated militant activity. During the search the joint force captured a Taliban improvised explosive device cell leader, responsible for directing IED emplacement and coordinating supply issues. When confronted, the cell leader identified himself. Two other insurgents were also captured.

    In Khowst last night, an Afghan-international security force searched a small compound outside the village of Sivakay, in the Terayzai District, after intelligence information indicated militant activity. During the search the joint force detained several suspected militants.

    In Paktiya last night, a joint security force searched a compound outside the village of Lewan, in the Zormat District, after intelligence information indicated militant activity. During the search the joint force captured a Taliban IED sub-commander responsible for instructing other militants on building and emplacing IEDs and how to conduct bomb damage assessment.

    Yesterday in the Shah Wali Kot District of Kandahar province, an Afghan-international security patrol came under a sustained and intense attack from a large group of insurgents using AK-47s, RPGs and heavy machine guns. During the firefight, the unit requested air support in order to protect themselves. ISAF aircraft subsequently dropped a number of precision-guided bombs on the positively identified insurgent positions. According to damage assessments, all of the insurgents were killed.

    No Afghan civilians were harmed during these operations.
