KIRKUK, Iraq - The Brigade Chaplains Department of 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division out of Fort Bliss, Texas, (Ready First) celebrated the National Day of Prayer in Forward Operating Base Warrior, Iraq's Dining Facility near Kirkuk, Iraq, May 6.
"It's a chance for people of all different faith groups to come together and pray for our Troops, our country and ourselves," said Staff Sgt. Tameka Dixon of Greenville, N.C., the 'Ready First' chaplain's assistant and non-commissioned officer in charge of the program.
"It's kind of like a kinship," she said. "We're not looking at each other's religion."
Prayers were led by both non-commissioned officers and officers from both the Army and Air Force.
Scriptures were read by Staff Sgt. Tiffani E. Lansdowne, of 1st BCT, 1st AD 'Ready First.'
A song was sung by a trio made up of Capt. Taylor Kim, chaplain with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Battalion; Capt. John Lee, chaplain, the 1-1 Special Troops Battalion, and Capt. Melissa K. Stewart, commander of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-1 STB.
The FOB Warrior, Iraq, Gospel Service Choir also sang a song led by Sgt. Ivan Knight of 501st Brigade Support Battalion, 'Ready First.'
The ceremony included prayers for Soldiers, their families, military leaders, civil leaders and prayers for our enemies.
The Ready First celebration of the National Day of Prayer ended with a sermon from Maj. Mark Diddle, chaplain, the Ready First brigade chaplain who encouraged those in attendance by stating, "You have the ability to communicate with God and get help in every area of your life."
Diddle, went on to say that the word prayer is listed 180 times in the Old Testament and 144 times in the New Testament.
"Don't wait till Sunday morning before your next prayer happens," he said.
Ready First's celebration of the National Day of Prayer ended with Airmen and Soldiers greeting each other on their way back to work.
