WASHINGTON - Insurgents conducted a vehicle-borne bombing attack on an International Security Assistance Force combat outpost west of Kandahar City in Afghanistan's Kandahar province today.
The attack killed at least one Afghan civilian and injured several others, including a child, ISAF officials said. Several ISAF and Afghan service members were wounded in the attack.
"As ISAF forces partner with Afghan security forces to deliver security, we expect to be targets of insurgent attacks," said Navy Capt. Jane Campbell, spokeswoman for ISAF Joint Command. "But once again, we see that the insurgents' indiscriminate use of [improvised explosive devices] has killed and injured several innocent civilians."
Another insurgent attack today that targeted a contractor's compound in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province reportedly killed four people and wounded 10 others.
Afghan forces responded to the scene to assist the victims with help from ISAF troops, who are caring for injured civilians at a nearby ISAF base. There are no reports of injuries to ISAF forces. The Kunduz attack was an attempt to intimidate Afghans and members of the international community trying to improve the lives of all Afghans, Campbell said.
"This attack shows the insurgents' desire to prevent progress and draws attention to their true goal of serving themselves rather than the people of Afghanistan," she said. "We remain committed to serving alongside our Afghan partners to improve security and development for all Afghans."
