KABUL, Afghanistan – A leading national daily newspaper published an article July 3, alleging that NATO International Security Assistance Force supply shipments transiting Pakistan bound for Afghanistan pose a significant security threat because of the pilferage and smuggling of weapons through this cargo. The article also alleges that trucks transporting NATO cargo cause significant damage to Pakistan's national highways.
These allegations are misleading and false. First, NATO ISAF does not ship any weapons or munitions in cargo containers through Pakistan bound for Afghanistan. Second, contracted vehicles transporting NATO ISAF cargo represent less that 20 percent of all commercial traffic transiting Pakistan's national highways through the Torkham and Chaman gates on a daily basis. Contracted drivers are required to meet internationally accepted loading and weight requirements to ensure safe and legal transportation of cargo. It is also important to point out that these commercial contracts infuse money into Pakistan's economy and create jobs for Pakistani truck drivers.
