KABUL, Afghanistan – Insurgents killed four children and one man, injuring eight others when they indiscriminately attacked a crowded bazaar in Musa Qal’ah District, Helmand province, July 4. Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police responded to the attack by insurgents who used an explosive laden motorcycle to attack innocent people shopping at the bazaar. Further havoc was averted when ISAF forces were successful in defusing a second explosive device discovered on a donkey in the area. Four Afghan civilians who were seriously injured were evacuated to Bastion Medical Facility; four others were treated at the site.

“Our enemies are doing all that they can to undermine the confidence of the Afghan people. In so doing, they are killing and maiming innocent Afghan civilians on a daily basis. No tactic is beneath the insurgents; they repeatedly kill innocent civilians, and they frequently seek to create situations that will result in injury to Afghan citizens,” said Gen David Petraeus, who had taken over as Commander of ISAF forces earlier in the day.

“This brutal attack perpetrated on the Afghan people clearly demonstrates the Taliban’s deranged tactics to try to scare Afghans. Yet, it only shows that they have no concern whatsoever for innocent human life,” said Petraeus. “Our sincere condolences and sympathy goes out to the families and friends affected by the loss of their loved ones in this brutal attack.”

ISAF is committed to fully partnering with the government of Afghanistan to find those responsible for today’s attack and to bring about an end to the indiscriminate violence against innocent civilians perpetrated by insurgents.
