    Afghan and International Forces capture, disrupt insurgent activity

    KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces with ISAF partners completed operations across Afghanistan to capture insurgents, destroy narcotics, disrupt insurgent improvised explosive device construction and interrupt insurgent funding gained through the sale of illegal narcotics.

    Wednesday night, July 7, an ANSF and ISAF combined force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban commander located in a compound in Nahr-e-Saraj District, Helmand province. During the operation several insurgents presented an immediate threat to the combined force and were killed, two men were taken into custody by Afghan authorities. Twenty kilograms of refined opium/heroin and a number of weapons were destroyed on site.

    Also on Wednesday night, a Ministry of Interior and ISAF combined force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban facilitator located in a compound in Logar province. After ANSF personnel ensured
    all residents safely exited the compound, a large number of women and children were protected and several men were taken into custody by Afghan authorities.

    Wednesday afternoon, an MOI and ISAF combined force conducted an operation to disrupt a compound in Laghman province used to construct IEDs for use against civilians, ANSF and ISAF forces. Three IEDs and several hand grenades, rockets and rocket propelled grenades were seized and will be destroyed by ANSF and ISAF personnel. Several men associated with the compound were taken into custody by Afghan authorities.

    Monday afternoon, July 5, an ANSF and ISAF combined force stopped a suspect vehicle in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province. The occupants of the vehicle fled to a nearby compound. ANSF personnel ensured all residents exited the compound safely and protected women and children who were in the compound at the time. The occupants of the vehicle, who are part of a narcotics and lethal smuggling network, were taken into custody.

    No civilians were injured in these operations.
