KABUL, Afghanistan - ISAF forces including U.S. Marines and sailors from the, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment Police Mentor Team provided medical training to Afghan National Police in Garmsir District's Hazer Joft in Helmand province July 5.
The mentors provide combat lifesaving skills training weekly to ANP officers at checkpoints surrounding the town and at the district governor's compound, which is also in Hazer Joft.
Marine medics, known as corpsmen, teach the proper use of a tourniquet, how to apply pressure dressings, the different types of bleeding and how to stop it, and other life saving techniques. Officers practice what they've learned on each other, which for most of the officers, is their favorite part of the training.
"Giving them the equipment and training and actually watching each other do it makes them more receptive to it; they remember more," said U.S. Navy Corpsman Zachary E. Frantz.
The goal is to provide the ANP with the basic skills they need so they can provide their own combat medical care.
"We can continue to train them, but the end state is to have no Marine mentor involvement, so they can do it on their own," said 1st Lt. Brice C. Turner, platoon commander and acting team leader.
Performing the training at the ANP posts allows the members to tailor the training to the needs of the police officers at a particular location.
They also provide more extensive training to the post commanders.
"It's more of a 'train the trainer mentality,' where the post commander can then train his police," said Turner.
