KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan-led force that was attacked while conducting a security patrol in the Nahr-E Saraj District, Helmand province, provided aid to an Afghan woman injured by insurgent fire July 10.
Afghan National Army commandos and U.S. Special Operations Forces troops were patrolling in and around Mirmandab and Heydarabad villages when they were attacked with rocket propelled grenade and heavy machine gun fire.
During the insurgent attack, a local woman suffered shrapnel wounds and was treated by the USSOF medical personnel on the scene.
Two insurgents who were injured during the attack were detained and also received medical treatment.
Immediately following the attack, the commander of the ANA commandos contacted a local elder to provide details of the events that took place. The elder said the presence of ANA commandos has helped save civilian lives, and he led the patrol to a nearby insurgent weapons cache.
"This is yet another example of the enemy's blatant disregard for innocent civilians," said Col. Donald C. Bolduc, the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan commander. "Our forces remain committed to doing everything possible to prevent non-combatant casualties and earning the Afghan people's trust and support for the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan."
