KABUL - Six Afghan civilians were killed and four were injured when the vehicle they were riding in hit a remote controlled improvised explosive device in Lashkar Gar District, Helmand province, today.
Initial reports indicate their vehicle was behind the rear vehicle of an ISAF patrol at the time of the explosion.
Afghan National security forces responded and secured the scene.
ISAF forces treated the injured and evacuated them to an ISAF medical facility for further treatment. As the ISAF medical helicopter was leaving the scene, it was engaged with small-arms fire from nearby compounds and crewmembers returned fire.
"This is another example of the insurgent's indiscriminately killing and maiming innocent civilians," said Col. William Maxwell, ISAF's Joint Command director of Combined Joint Operations Center.
In the past week, insurgents are responsible for killing approximately 38 civilians and injuring 84. Of this number, IED attacks are responsible for approximately 15 deaths and injuring another 45. In the past week, ISAF forces have found and destroyed approximately 146 IEDs, four of which were civilian turn-ins.
