KABUL, Afghanistan - A joint ANSF and ISAF patrol found eight IEDs planted by insurgents in the vicinity of an old school in the Zharay District of Kandahar province yesterday.

The location, in a building that was used as the Palab village school, was marked and secured by Afghan National Security Forces and the IEDs are scheduled to be removed by an ISAF Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team.

This incident marks the fourth time in as many months that IEDs have been found in or near schools, several of which have exploded killing and wounding innocent civilians.

On July 5, in the Deh Rawud District of Uruzgan province, two explosions at a school work site killed two construction workers and injured five civilians.

In May, an ISAF patrol found eight IEDs, 56 kilograms of home-made explosives and two anti-personnel mines in the Kuhak school courtyard in Kandahar province.

In April, a joint Afghan-international force found four IEDs buried on the side of the road running beside the same Kuhak school, two IEDs buried outside the gate of the school and three IEDs were uncovered in the school courtyard.

U.N. reports have noted that a vast majority of civilian casualties in Afghanistan are the result of insurgent IEDs.
