KABUL, Afghanistan – ISAF rejects the false statements Taleban spokesman Zabihollah Mojahed delivered to Pajhwok Afghan News, July 13, citing an IED attack in Helmand province as proof of the Taleban misstatements.

At 5:30 p.m., July 13, in Nad Ali District Helmand province, eight Afghan civilians were killed and four were wounded in by the detonation of a Taleban-planted improvised explosive device. Afghan National Civil Order Police responded to the site immediately and evacuated the casualties to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

“ISAF offers condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed and injured in this shameful Taleban attack,” said ISAF operations spokesman Lt. Col. John Dorrian. “This is proof that the Taleban spokesman lies to the Afghan people. On July 13, Zabihollah Mojahed told Pajhwok news the Taleban use remote controlled explosive devices as a weapon of choice against international and Afghan government forces. So either that statement is a lie, or the Taleban purposely detonated the device to kill these civilians.”

According to Lt. Col. Dorrian, the Taleban have killed more than 160 civilians since June 1st. “This simple fact proves Zabihollah Mojahed’s statement that the Taleban ‘pay special attention to ordinary Afghans’ lives’ is untrue,” Dorrian said.

Dorrian also disagreed with Mojahed’s statement about carrying out ‘suicide attacks in areas where the ordinary people cannot reach,’ citing the June 9th 2010 Taleban suicide attack on a wedding party in Arghandab, Nagahan Village, Kandahar. The attack killed more than 50 people and wounded more than 80. Most of the casualties were civilians, including women and children. The suicide vehicle contained 1/2 inch ball bearings to maximize the number of people killed and injured.
