Sea Dragons Do Exist

Approximately 20 Sailors from Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14, based at U.S. Naval Station Norfolk, Va., are currently providing support to Haiti from U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in support of Operation Unified Response. The crew is working around the clock to provide transport of cargo and personnel, both military members and media representatives, to areas in and out of Haiti, as a part of Task Force 48. Operating from Guantanamo Bay, TF-48 is coordinating air and sea assets in the delivery of immediate life-saving humanitarian assistance to Haiti.

Air Terminal at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay Busy in Haiti Relief Effort

As U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay and Joint Task Force Guantanamo continue support of disaster relief efforts following the devastating earthquake in Haiti Jan. 12, a joint logistics hub at the naval station and the air terminal has been established to coordinate and lead humanitarian relief efforts to the island. During operations, the air terminal tempo is practically non-stop.

Service members from Fleet Logistics Support Squadron arrived at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to help support Operation Unified Response after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti, Jan. 12.

106th CES Supports Operation Unified Response From Guantanamo

Airmen from the 106th Civil Engineering Squadron of the New York Air National Guard thought they were coming for a traditional two-week training deployment at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, but increased operations at the naval station airfield in support of Operation Unified Response are providing plenty of training opportunities for these guardsmen.

A Celebration of Change

As the nation paused to honor and remember slain civil rights leader and Nobel Peace laureate, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., members of the U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay community gathered to commemorate his birthday and celebrate the life of the heroic civil rights leader, Jan. 18. Many held hands and sang songs from the civil rights era, including "We Shall Overcome."

Making Improvements Throughout Joint Task Force Guantanamo, U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay

Airmen from the 106th Civil Engineering Squadron of the New York Air National Ground arrived at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Jan. 16, and hit the ground running in support of various engineering and construction projects at Joint Task Force Guantanamo and throughout the base. The engineering squadron replaced airmen from the 190th Civil Engineering Squadron from the Kansas Air National Guard for a two-week training deployment.

Vietnam Veteran Still Serving

Leadership and professionalism are words lived by Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael Gholston. Gholston, a 55-year-old public affairs supervisor, is currently serving at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in support of Joint Task Force Guantanamo.

Airmen from the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing based at F.S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, Long Island, arrived at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Jan. 16 for a two-week training deployment that began with a mission change.
