JACKSONVILLE, N.C.—Everyday, across the globe, service members perform their duties as part of America's defensive shield.
From time to time, their actions on and off the battlefield go beyond the call of duty and they are recognized for their actions.
The 2nd Annual American Hero Awards was hosted, May 2, at SywanykS Scarlet & Gold Traditions for a group of four Marines and one Sailor from across II Marine Expeditionary Force commending them for heroic deeds performed in the past.
Retired service members, as well as active-duty Marines and Sailors, gathered inside SywanykS surrounded by Navy and Marine Corps memorabilia. Men and women were dressed formally and Marines wore their Service "A" uniforms.
A color guard from II MEF helped start the night's events by posting the colors as the National Anthem played through speakers throughout the establishment. A small choral group came forward next and sang a variety of patriotic songs, including the "Anchors Aweigh," "The Marines' Hymn" and "America the Beautiful."
Staff Sgt. Samuel Deeds, Sgt. Mark Robinson, Sgt. Joseph Buompastore, Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Blas and Cpl. Jared Hege, were recognized for their heroic actions and received plaques and gifts from local businesses and community organizations
Robinson, a Marine with U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command, received the John Archer Lejeune Award for Bravery from Lt. Gen. Dennis J. Hejlik, commanding general, II MEF, for his actions during a fire fight while deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In 218 B.C., during the second Punic War between Rome and Carthage, the great Carthaginian, General Hannibal, did what many Romans thought to be impossible – he invaded northern Italy by marching his army over the Pyrenees and the Alps mountain ranges. Not only did he have to fight his way through various tribes using clever mountain tactics, he also had to combat the harsh mountainous elements, the elevation, logistical problems, and the terrain. After engaging in three strenuous weeks of training at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif. during Exercise White Mountain the operators of 3d Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command may have a new appreciation for the challenges that Hannibal faced in the mountains.
