The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' original Jameson Island Chute Project crosses the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The Corps has announced plans to restore additional shallow water habitat on the site by diverting the existing outlet and extending the chute another mile to the west. The Corps says this chute is a great example of fish and wildlife habitat that is in short supply on the river. In 2007, placement of sediment from chute construction in the Missouri River was at the center of controversy between the Corps and the Missouri River Clean Water Commission. The Corps voluntarily halted construction at that time but says that monitoring and studies since that time support re-initiation of their shallow water habitat restoration efforts.
