MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors of II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) are in the process of deploying to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and will complete the deployment process in February.
Major General W. Lee Miller, II MEF (Fwd) commanding general, will join NATO International Security Assistance Force to replace I Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Pendleton, Calif., as Headquarters, Regional Command Southwest. Its mission will be Security Force Assistance to guide, advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces as they assume responsibility for providing security for the Afghan people.
II MEF (Fwd) will include approximately 7,000 personnel including 2nd Marine Air Wing (Forward) from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., II MEF Headquarters Group (Fwd) and Combat Logistics Regiment 2 from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Regimental Combat Team 7 from Marine Corps Camp Pendleton.
