FORT STEWART, Ga. - Hundreds of Fort Stewart soldiers and Family Members gathered at Club Stewart, Feb. 7, for the annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast.

The breakfast was held simultaneously with other communities throughout the nation including Washington, D.C., where it has been held every year on the first Thursday of February since 1953.
Brigadier General John Hort, Third Infantry Division-rear commander, hosted this year’s breakfast.

The guest speaker was Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield Installation Senior Chaplain Col. Terry Meek.

Colonel Meek used the occasion to encourage the attendees and the soldiers who are not deployed to not feel insignificant with being left behind to keep watch over the rear.

“But I say that when you are serving others, you are never a secondary citizen, you’re not the B team,” Col. Meek said.
So, what does it mean to be a servant?

The word servant comes from the Greek word Diakonos or deacon. It denotes work that is done in freedom and with dignity, Col. Meek explained.

As a first time attendee to a prayer breakfast, Sgt. Kristy Stringer, DHHB, 3rd ID, said she’s inspired to begin helping others.

“I’ve always wanted to attend [a prayer breakfast] but didn’t,” she said. "For me, it was confirmation on things I was already thinking of. I love helping people, like helping people smile, and trying to be there for people, so it was confirmation to going ahead and do it.“
For one Fort Stewart commander, the breakfast served as an opportunity to spend some quality time with some of her soldiers.

“It’s good to take a minute out of your busy schedule to fellowship,” said Capt. Robin Wharton, commander of 233rd Transportation Company, 87th Combat Service Support Battalion, 3rd Support Brigade. “I was able to sit with my soldiers today and get to know them a little bit more on a personal level.”

It was initially called the Presidential Prayer Breakfast; the name was changed in 1970 to the National Prayer Breakfast.
