JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The basis on which yoga was founded has been used for thousands of years as a form of exercise and in some cases as a tool of spiritual enlightenment.
Yoga can have many benefits in both physical and mental health to a wide range of individuals, both young and old; whether they are body builders, marathon runners or just want to improve their overall health.
The basis on which yoga was founded has been used for thousands of years as a form of exercise and in some cases as a tool of spiritual enlightenment.
Yoga’s origin goes back to ancient India where it was used as a tool to focus and align the mind, body and spirit.
“One of the most important traits that I like to incorporate into my sessions is the mind and body connection,” said Annette Petrongelli, AS-4400 fitness and group fitness instructor, “I always play soft, smooth music in my classes. The music helps to ease the mind of distractions and allows the mind and body to connect more fluidly.”
Many cultures believe yoga also has a wide variety of health benefits and can aid participants with problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes and asthma.
“As a fitness and yoga instructor, one of the big health benefits I have noticed is the removal of toxins from the body,” said Petrongelli. “Lactic acid is a substance that is known to collect in the muscle tissues and cause muscle soreness, especially after some sort of workout, and it has been proven that yoga can help to drive or ‘squeeze’ this out of the muscles.”
Yoga is also used to help relax the body and mind from everyday difficulties and stress build-ups.
“The setting of my class is centered on working out and relaxation,” said Petrongelli. “The stretching of muscles helps to relieve the tension in them which can help you relax while you work out your body. One of the poses that I like to end with is called ‘corpse pose’ which allows you to lie down and completely relax every part of your body.”
While yoga may not be for everyone, it does hold many mental and
physical benefits for a wide variety of people. “I am absolutely in love with yoga and what it offers,” said Traci McKinney, yoga class participant. “The class has helped me become less stressed, more flexible and stronger over the past few months I have been participating. I have also decreased my body fat percentage and lost more than 10 pounds and six inches.”
