MANSFIELD, Ohio - Two C-130H Hercules arrived at the 179th Airlift Wing, Ohio Air National Guard.
Ohio Air National Guardsmen of the 179th Airlift Wing are happy to see it back. The “Herc” is a familiar sight in the sky over Mansfield, Ohio.
The C-27J Spartan has been in its place on the Mansfield runway since the last C-130H left in August 2010.
Two C-130H Hercules arrived at the 179th Airlift Wing today, one with the state flag of Ohio being held out of the top and the other with an Ohio State Buckeyes flag. The tails and markings all show that these aircraft have been transferred from the Alaska Air National Guard.
These two cargo aircraft begin the arrival of eight C-130H Hercules, as announced in March by the secretary of the Air Force.
Under aviation force structure changes in the Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, the four C-27J Spartan aircraft currently at the 179th will be divested, while the eight C-130Hs will be fielded there. The new airlift mission will add approximately 200 jobs at the 179th.
Two of the eight aircraft are now in place and so begins a new chapter in its unit history. The 179th Airlift Wing has a history of adapting to change and overcoming adversity with the strong support from its community and its leadership from the state of Ohio. The wing is scheduled to receive the eighth aircraft by June 2016.
