TARIN KOT, AFGHANISTAN - The Singapore Armed Forces concluded its six-year mission to Afghanistan on Jun 22, 2013, with a ceremony at Multinational Base - Tarin Kot, Uruzgan province.
Maj. Gen. Ravinder Singh, chief of the Singapore Army, Maj. Gen. Robert ‘Abe’ Abrams, commanding general of Regional Command (South), and Maj. Gen. Michael Crane, commander of Joint Task Force 633, attended the ceremony.
Abrams commended Singapore for its firm stance in combating terrorism and contributing to a more secure Afghanistan.
"The Singapore Armed Forces have done tremendous work across Afghanistan for the last six years," Abrams said. "They are the utmost professionals. They are committed, dedicated, and have performed superb work in many different niche capabilities."
In November 2008, Singapore deployed its first medical and surgical team of approximately 20 health professionals to Uruzgan province. Since that time their contribution has evolved to include surveillance and reconnaissance platforms, imagery analysis teams, counter improvised explosive device instructors and headquarters staff support.
Commander Combined Team Uruzgan, Col. Simon Stuart, said the capabilities brought by the Singaporeans were perfectly formed and instrumental in achieving his mission.
"You have demonstrated professionalism and technical mastery in equal measure and you should depart with the knowledge that your efforts have contributed to helping protect the lives of coalition soldiers and Afghans alike,” Stuart said. “You are a credit to the combined team, to the Singaporean Armed Forces and to your nation.”
Nearly 600 Singaporean soldiers have been deployed to Afghanistan since 2007 with personnel serving in Bamiyan, Kabul, Kandahar, and Uruzgan provinces.
