2nd SOK commandos kill 5 insurgents in Ghazni

GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Commandos from the 2nd Special Operations Kandak killed five insurgents during a clearing operation Aug. 17 in Ghazni province’s Waghez district.

The commandos were clearing Sehdewal, Adro Kala, and Khandaq villages when a group of 12 heavily-armed insurgents ambushed the commandos, using mortars, assault rifles, machine guns, and rocket-propelled grenades.

The commandos immediately returned fire, causing the insurgents to retreat. The gun battle resulted in five enemy fighters killed, one commando killed, and another commando wounded.

Afghan National Security Forces have irreversibly taken the lead for Afghanistan’s security, underscoring the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Tranche 5, Milestone 2013 announcement this summer.

“Our mission is to destroy the insurgents’ hiding places, to capture insurgents and to eliminate those who are trying to destroy this country,” said Lt. Col. Ahmadullah Popal, the 2nd SOK commander. “Our commandos are experts and well-trained soldiers who bring a lot of good changes for their nation.”

Afghan National Army Special Forces commandos are an elite group who conduct high-risk operations in remote areas known to be enemy strongholds. These counterinsurgency missions assist national and local police in their efforts to increase security, governance and development.
