ANASF, ALP repel insurgents’ attack, kill nine in Gelan District
GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces killed nine insurgents and wounded seven Nov. 3 while defending two police checkpoints in Ghazni province’s Gelan district.
More than 16 insurgents attacked two Afghan Local Police checkpoints in Wara village using rocket propelled grenades, and mortar fire. Afghan National Army special forces of the 2nd Special Operations Kandak responded quickly to deter the attack and reinforce the checkpoints.
ANASF received similar enemy fire as they made their way to assist the policemen under attack and ultimately killing the attackers – ending the enemy’s assault.
"The incident has shown the superiority of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan over the Taliban,” said Mahbuballah Sabawoon, Gelan district governor.
ANSF officials said the Taliban have pressured the district in the past weeks, but they have not made progress in the area. This joint effort dealt a significant defeat to the insurgents in Gelan and demonstrated the ANSF’s capabilities.
“The training of the local police and Afghan special forces are far superior to the enemy’s,” added Sabawoon. “And [for that reason] they will be victorious.”
ANSF have proven to be resilient and capable, and have largely been able to defend against direct insurgent attacks. The insurgency has been unsuccessful in weakening the ANSF.
“The Taliban's disrespect of Islam has driven their supporters into the open arms of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” said Sabawoon.
