VIRGINIA - Defense Logistics Agency Energy Pacific provided fuel support to the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which will conduct field research to determine the climate impact of the warm western tropical Pacific Ocean waters and their influence on the atmosphere.
The NCAR staff contacted DLA Energy Pacific personnel about fuel support for their Gulfstream V research aircraft at Wake Island, DLA Energy Pacific Fuels Operations Program Manager Greg Coleman said.
“We worked with the NCAR staff and determined that they were able to purchase the requested 3,500 gallons of JP5 aviation fuel under a current [Department of Defense Activity Address Code] with the National Science Foundation,” Coleman said.
Coleman also provided contact information to NCAR personnel so they could coordinate a landing permit and fuel support on Wake Island and then contacted the 611th Air Support Squadron on the island about the mission.
The National Science Foundation-funded field project, Convective Transport of Active Species in the Tropics, will investigate how the warm waters of the western tropical Pacific feed heat and moisture into huge clusters of thunderstorms that loft gases and particles in the stratosphere, where they spread out over the entire planet and influence the climate.
More than 40 scientists from NCAR, the University of Maryland, the University of Miami, other universities, and NASA will take part in CONTRAST Jan. 14-March 2.
