CAMP PENDLETON, Calif - Media are invited to attend the homecoming Thursday of Marines and Sailors from Afghanistan’s Helmand province at approximately 1:30 p.m. PST aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
The returnees will include Brig. Gen. Daniel Yoo, commanding general of Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan and the last commanding general of International Security Assistance Force’s Regional Command (Southwest).
In addition to conducting combat operations, these Marines and Sailors focused their efforts on preparing the Afghanistan National Security Forces to assume responsibility for Helmand and Nimroz provinces while completing the retrograde and transfer of all coalition bases.
The tenure of Marines in Afghanistan’s Helmand province began July 2, 2009 with the insertion of about 4,000 Marines and came to an official close on Oct. 26, 2014 with a handover to the ANSF and a tactical withdrawal of all remaining coalition forces.
