YOKOSUKA, Japan - Eighteen Sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) along with members of the Yokosuka Chapter of the Lions Club visited Ichiban Boshi Nursing Home for a community relations (COMREL) project Jan. 22.
Sailors helped with the upkeep and deep cleaning of multiple rooms in the facility, a gesture that builds on the long-standing relationship between the Navy, Ichiban Boshi and the Lions Club.
“The U.S. Navy has supported our facility for 40 years,” said Yuko Ichiyama, Ichiban Boshi’s lead supervisor. “I’d like to say thank you for the continued support.”
Masaharu Tsuchimura, Lions Club president, also expressed gratitude for the combined effort in keeping Ichiban Boshi’s facilities in good shape and the joy he gets from the annual Christmas party held at Ichiban Boshi.
Sailors like Chief Operations Specialist Shaun Cale, who served as the COMREL team leader, also share the same gratitude and joy when volunteering in the community. Cale returned to Japan aboard George Washington as an Operations Department divisional leading chief petty officer after serving a two-year tour in Japan more than 10 years ago.
“It’s great to come back to participate in something that helps out our local community and have Sailors who enjoy it at the same time.”
George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
