FORT STEWART, Ga. - Signal Soldiers of 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division conducted a communication exercise, or COMMEX, at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Aug. 15-18.

"This exercise is important to ensuring mission readiness is always 100 percent," said Capt. Veronica Kyle, commander of Charlie Company, 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd IBCT.

The signal corps Soldiers are responsible for maintaining operator proficiency and equipment readiness to support communication for the brigade during missions.

The COMMEX primarily focused on validating recent upgrades to the warfighter information network-tactical, WIN-T, equipment, according to Master Sgt. Shanan Harris, noncommissioned officer in charge of communication operations with 2nd IBCT.

WIN-T is the Army’s common tactical communications network that provides secure reliable voice, video and data communications anytime, anywhere, according to program executive office command control communications tactic website.

Additionally, the exercise facilitated collaborative troubleshooting resources amongst battalions.

“This is a good opportunity for us because we have all of our battalions in one general area,” Harris said. “So the moment we find a fault we have multiple subject matter experts on hand to assist.”

The event offered valuable time for Soldiers with varying levels of experience to focus on primary military occupational specialties, or MOSs, as well as train with others, according to Harris and other participants.

“When we can dedicate additional time to communication signal training it's always a plus,” Harris said.

"I recently was in a class to learn how to operate the [joint network node], which isn't really part of my primary MOS," said Spc. John Smarr, multichannel transmission systems operator with C Co., 9th BEB. “This week I have been able to build on what I learned in class and also have time with my usual equipment.”

Following the COMMEX, the brigade’s upgraded communication assets are slated to be fully mission capable and lead to additional brigade validation events.

“After the exercise is complete the brigade will be prepared to conduct digital gunnery,” Harris said. “This is where we focus on the validating of our operators’ and squads’ abilities.”
