Meet the new 90th Missile Wing Command Chief, Chief Master Sgt. Steagall

F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, WYOMING, UNITED STATES

    09.15.2016

Story by Airman 1st Class Breanna Diaz

    90th Missile Wing

Prior to his arrival at the 90th MW, Steagall was the 603rd Air Communications Squadron chief enlisted manager at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Steagall is the primary advisor to the commander in support of over 4,200 military, civilian and contract personnel that provide strategic nuclear deterrence by operating, maintaining, securing and supporting 15 missile alert facilities and 150 Minuteman III ICBMs ready to launch at the direction of the president of the United States.

Q: Why did you decide to join the Air Force in the cyberspace career field?

A: “I’m from a very small farming community in Ohio, and the Air Force was the best option I had. My choices were the farm, the factory or the military, and the military appealed to me because it gave me an opportunity to reach my full potential. I was originally going into medical administration, but scored well enough on a computer-skills test. I was offered an extra stripe to switch to computers, so I took it.”

Q: What do you look forward to most about being with the 90th MW?

A: “Airmen are my passion because I like helping young people achieve their goals. There are not many professions that allow you to work for the nation and help impact and mold young people at the same time. What America needs the most are the sons and daughters of the people who have the least to give. Parents turn their children over to us, and that is a profound responsibility.”

Q: How will you help 90th MW Airmen who support the ICBM mission?

A: “I’ll help by being present. The most important thing, for any leader, is availability. It’s important to get involved. I’m here to engage with Airmen, figure out their priorities, what they value and where we are falling short. I want to be there in the good times as well as the bad. I’m amazed at how many Airmen I see at the gym or commissary that ask if I have a minute to talk, and I always make myself available.”

Q: How will you ensure the mission is safe, secure and effective?

A: “I will stress attention to detail, leading by example and confronting problems. We always have to enforce standards because when we overlook little things, they become big things.”

Q: What are some operational goals you have in mind for the 90th MW?

A: “We have a higher threshold of inspectible criteria in order to maintain safe, reliable and secure weapons, so I would like to see us do well on our nuclear surety and unit-level inspections. I also want to make sure we’re not just inspection ready, but we’re always ready.”

Q: What can the Airmen of the 90th MW expect from you, and what do you expect from them?

A: “They can expect me to be present and fair. I want to be more than a picture on the wall. I’m going to be visible and accountable. I’m not going to tell them what they want to hear, but what they need to hear. What I expect from them is to be professional, motivated Airmen and to have a positive attitude. When they go to work every day, I want them to give their best effort. Also, I want them to get something out of the Air Force, while the Air Force is getting something out of them. It’s important to make sure that their personal goals are met, be it travel, education or professional development.”
