Marine Master Sgt. Travis A. Williams recently became the recipient of the 2015 Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award. This award is an annual award given to the most outstanding company grade officers and enlisted Marines and Sailors at each regiment/group or headquarters-level unit within the operating forces.

The award gives the Marine Corps a chance to honor its most outstanding leaders who have contributed greatly to the Marine Corps’ mission for that year.

“I feel that Master Sgt. Williams is what most Marines should aspire to be like when it comes to being a leader,” said Sgt. Clent Crumley, a cyber network specialist with 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “He is very knowledgeable at his job and isn’t afraid to stick his neck out for his Marines.”

Williams, an East Orange, New Jersey native, has been in the Marine Corps for 22 years. He was nominated for the award in 2015 by his peers. On November 19, 2016, he received the award from Lt. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, Commanding General, III Marine Expeditionary Force.

NMA sponsors more than 400 awards annually for presentation by the commanders of Naval Air Forces, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Marine Forces Atlantic and Pacific and the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy to those officers and enlisted personnel who have been selected by their peers as outstanding leaders in their respective communities.

“It was a surprise to me,” said Williams. “I had heard I was nominated for an award but didn’t know the details and I was very humbled.”

Master Sgt. Williams is the communications chief for 3D MEB, III MEF.
