An individual mobilization augmentee is an individual army reservist attending drills that receives training and is pre-assigned to an active component organization, a selective service system, or a Federal Emergency Management Agency billet that must be filled on, or shortly after, mobilization.

"My IMA slot is great because I can balance my drill dates with my work schedule," said Capt. Felix Santana, an IMA assigned to Surface Deployment Distribution Command and a New York City police officer.

IMA's train on a part-time basis with their organizations to prepare for mobilization. Inactive duty training for individual mobilization augmentees is decided by component policy and can vary from 0 to 48 drills a year. These IMA positions are not geographically limited. The soldier will be paid to travel and train at the command location during their annual training. Annual training may be conducted overseas in places such as Korea or Germany.

The command works with the IMA soldier on finding an aligned unit or a separate unit for their IMA soldiers to conduct local drills close to their homes. These drills can be conducted in a flexible schedule.

"The IMA program is a great asset for the active-duty commander," said Master Sgt. Kevin Young, a seasoned reserve non-commissioned officer with deployments to Iraq, Bosnia, and Germany.

"The only downside is that the IMA soldier lacks the administrative support of a reserve unit. The soldiers must take charge of their own records and updates. This admin responsibility is time-consuming, but good for professional development," said Young.

Most IMA slots are for non-commissioned officers and officers. Check the Army Human Resources Command Reserve IMA vacancy chart list at https://www.hrc.army.mil/site/protect/Reserve/soldierservices/tours/ima-are-vacancy.htm

Soldiers can search for vacancies based on grade, specialty, geographic region, and unit type. The authorized strength for Army IMA soldiers for FY 07 was 6000.
