WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense, U.S. Strategic Command’s missile defense arm, executed the first Design and Planning Workshop Conference of the Nimble Titan 24 Campaign from Sept. 11-21.

Nimble Titan is an experimentation war game that explores strategic military and policy responses related to integrated air and missile defense. The in-person, two-week event included a keynote speech delivered by the Honorable Mallory Stewart, Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance, followed by working groups sessions to design and plan the war game.

A total of 69 delegates from 16 nations and three international organizations gathered in Crystal City, Washington, D.C. to design and plan the Competition Event, scheduled for Dec. 11-18. The first part of the conference, the Design Workshop, refined the campaign focus areas and national objectives as well as developed and approved the event structure for the December event.

“Nimble Titan campaigns are purely driven by objectives that all Nimble Titan member nations and organizations have agreed to,” said Lt. Col. Thorsten Tanski, German Air Force. “The main effort of the two workshops was to translate these objectives into an executable playbook for the first phase of this campaign’s war game as well as developing a solid plan to analyze the findings.”

The second part of the conference, the Planning Workshop developed precise analyst prompt questions and war game vignettes to drive participants to meet the campaign objectives.

Lt. Col. Mikkel Perlt, Royal Danish Air Force, said, “The Design and Planning Workshop drew on the combined efforts of all the represented nations and organizations. It effectively distilled the general topic of exploring missile defense into specific questions aligned with the established national objectives, providing the framework for successful qualitative analysis of the Competition Event in December.”

Nimble Titan has expanded in purpose, scope, and size since its inception in the 1990s. Senior leader guidance from the Nimble Titan 20 Senior Leader Event and the Nimble Titan 24 Campaign Design Conference also recommended exploring strategic policy responses to disruptive new technologies, interoperability considerations, and space support to missile defense.

As potential adversaries increase their offensive air and missile capabilities, allies and partners must work together to formulate a cohesive response.

“Nimble Titan is the premier international forum for developing experimental policy and military options for the evolving and increasingly complex integrated missile defense mission,” said U.S. Army Col. Chris Smith, Nimble Titan director. “We continue to build and strengthen relationships with our allies and partners and value the opportunity for dialogue on this important strategic deterrence issue.

“The collective effort of the Nimble Titan community has established the necessary conditions for the Competition Event in December and laid the groundwork for a successful Nimble Titan 24 Campaign,” Smith said.
