    127th Wing

Holding an ID card is a fundamental part of military service and is even considered to be a part of a service member’s uniform. Customer service specialists at the 127th Force Support Squadron operate the ID card office at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, ensuring both current members of the military and retirees have accurate, up-to-date cards.

Most military members have a Common Access Card, which is used to access computer networks via an embedded chip, in addition to serving as a card that provides access to various facilities. Civilian employees of the military also hold CAC cards for similar purposes. Retirees and military family members have ID cards that provide access to facilities and services, but do not have access to computer networks. The cards also are tied in to the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS, which ensures that military members and dependents are enrolled in health care insurances and other benefits programs.

At Selfridge, the 127th FSS office primarily serves members of the Michigan Air National Guard, but also provides ID card support to personnel from all military services and retirees.

On a recent Saturday morning, Airman 1st Class Hailey Brewer was trained by Senior Airman Heather Burks on the CAC card validation process. Brewer had been working in another section of the personnel office and was now being cross trained to work in the customer service area.

“I enjoy working in this environment,” said Brewer, who has been a member of the 127th FSS for over four years. “The people I work with are like family to me — my family away from home.”

Brewer was trained on the ID card process, which includes validating a member’s enlistment dates, family dependents, adding an updated photo to the database, and finally printing a new card. Senior Airman Heather Burks, who has worked in 127th FSS customer service for about four years, provided the training.

“I love the structure of the military,” Burks said.

Burks works on a variety of personnel actions, including completing paperwork when Airmen re-enlist.

“Working with the paperwork, I see the names of a lot of people in the wing. When they come in to get an ID card, I get to put a face with the names. I like meeting new people, so this is a great job for me,” Burks said.

The 127th FSS ID card office is located in Building 304 at Selfridge. Appointments are set from 10 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in half-hour increments on Tuesdays and Fridays. Walk-ins can been seen on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. with 127th Wing Members given priority in the morning.
