Sailors from the medical team supporting Marine Corps Engineering Detachment – Palau conducted ultrasound training with the Belau National Hospital in Koror, Republic of Palau, Sept. 9, 2023.

“I think this training is extremely beneficial for a lot of the physicians that serve here,” said Dr. Myra Frasier, the acting chief of staff for Belau National Hospital. “We don’t get as much exposure to certain training and it’s amazing being able to have doctors volunteer to help us learn new methods.”

The MCED-P medical staff has gone to extensive efforts to look for volunteer opportunities at medical clinics and hospitals in multiple states around the Republic of Palau.

“My favorite part of teaching physicians here in Palau is witnessing their dedication to the practice of medicine, their patients, and their nation,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Daniel Neren, an emergency medicine physician with Marine Corps Engineer Detachment 23.2. “Training the Palau National Hospital staff in point of care ultrasound, a field in which our Navy medical team has significant expertise, improves their capabilities and is a big part of how we contribute to this enduring partnership.”

Ultrasound training is directly beneficial to the physicians at Belau National Hospital because it allows physicians to rapidly diagnosis life-threatening conditions at the bedside. Furthermore, this type of ultrasound can be used to guide life-saving medical procedures, making them both safer and more effective.

“Being able to practically apply the skills we are going over within the same day as the classes are taught really helps preserve the knowledge,” said Frasier. “The teaching was very clear and there were many, many examples to help us achieve a deeper understanding of the training.”

This training both directly affects the productivity and proficiency of medical providers on both sides, but also allows for relationship building between the United States military and medical professionals in the Republic of Palau.

“The Palauan National Hospital and its staff are always there, ready to assist with open arms, when Marines and Sailors need X-RAYs, laboratory tests, or even minor surgical procedures,” said Neren. “Despite the limited resources that come from practicing in a relatively remote location compared to the United States, they provide extremely high-quality care to their people, and I am truly honored to pass along some of the knowledge and skills I have acquired during my medical training to such an amazing group of physicians.”
