KABUL, Afghanistan - Soldiers from the Afghan National Army's 215th Corps recently completed a course at Camp Leatherneck where they learned light tactical vehicle operations.
The course is designed to improve the safety of coalition and Afghan national security forces operations in rural Helmand province.
Because many of the Afghan soldiers have never driven a vehicle before, the classroom portion of the course took on added significance, according to Staff Sgt. Ryan Meyer. The staff worked closely with the course's linguist.
"Usually we try to teach our linguists how to operate the vehicles first so they understand what we are teaching, and that way it translates a lot easier while we are teaching the course," said Meyer.
The extra preparation seems to be paying off.
"I like this course because we have everything we need," said Afghan Army Sgt. Shamahmod, the Afghan class leader. "We have professional instructors who are really helping us. Our Marine instructors are good and very cooperative in every section with our soldiers."
The newly-trained Afghan soldiers will soon operate vehicles side-by-side with coalition forces. Because of this, Marine instructors who oversee the course make a concerted effort to make sure each student receives comprehensive instruction, according to Meyer.
