KABUL - An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected Taliban insurgents in Kandahar province Tuesday, including an improvised explosive device cell commander who directed and facilitated suicide bomber attacks within Kandahar City.
The security force targeted a compound in Kandahar City to search for the commander. Afghan forces called for all residents to exit the compound peacefully and then secured the area.
After questioning the residents, the assault force detained the commander and other suspected insurgents. High explosive material was also found and destroyed at the scene.
"Suicide bombers are part of the reason for an increase in civilian casualties in Afghanistan," said Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Now there is one less-commander out there giving orders which result in the death of innocent civilians."
The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children throughout the search.
