KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces conducted a combined operation Aug. 12 resulting in the detention of several individuals in the Registan desert, Kandahar province.

The individuals have suspected links to insurgents and narcotics and were discovered by conducting vehicle checks in high traffic areas of the desert. The combined force seized weapons and destroyed two vehicles used for illicit trafficking of drugs.

"These operations will demonstrate to locals that criminal activities will not go unpunished," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Disrupting the flow of narcotics throughout the regions will impact fund raising for insurgent activities."
