KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan government official and a member of the Afghan National Police were killed by insurgents in the village bazaar of Qala I Khuna in the Gulistan district of Farah province, Aug. 16.

According to reports, two insurgents on a motorcycle shot and killed the government official in the bazaar. An ANP member returned fire on the gunmen, but was subsequently killed by the insurgents.

"By savagely attacking a government official in a crowded bazaar, this demonstrates not only the insurgents' fear of governance in Afghanistan, but a total disregard for innocent Afghan lives," said U.S. Air Force Col. James Dawkins, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "The insurgents' can offer nothing but death and destruction to the people of Afghanistan."
