KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents in Helmand province Monday, Aug. 17, in their continued pursuit of a senior Taliban commander and member of the Nawa Military Commission.

The commander is responsible for decisions involving military operations and matters of governance within the Taliban-controlled areas of Nawah-ye Barakzai district.

As the joint security force approached the targeted compounds in Nawah-ya Barakzai district, suspected insurgents ran from one of the buildings. The security force chased them down and detained them peacefully.

After the area was secure, Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then cleared the buildings. After questioning all the residents, the security force detained two additional suspected insurgents. The security force found two bags of wet opium, Taliban propaganda tapes and a large knife at the scene.

"The Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces are assisting provincial government leaders to bring justice to those that have held the law abiding citizens of the Helmand province hostage with brutality," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.

The assault force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children throughout the search.
