KABUL – The International Security Assistance Force confirmed the capture of a senior Taliban commander and member of the Nawa Military Commission.
The commander was responsible for decisions involving military operations and matters of governance within the Taliban-controlled areas of Nawah-ye Barakzai district. He was among several suspected Taliban insurgents detained during an Afghan and coalition force operation Monday.
As the joint security force approached the targeted compounds in Nawah-ye Barakzai district, four suspected insurgents, including the commander, ran from one of the buildings. The security force chased them down and detained them peacefully.
After the area was secure, Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then cleared the buildings. After questioning all the residents, the security force detained two additional suspected insurgents. The security force found two bags of wet opium, Taliban propaganda tapes and a large knife at the scene.
The assault force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children throughout the search.
