KABUL – An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents in Zabul province Tuesday while in pursuit of a cross-district Taliban commander and facilitator operating in both Shah Joy district and Gelan district in neighboring Ghazni province.
The commander is an expert improvised explosive device operative who specializes in the facilitation, construction and placement of IED's. He is also linked to vehicle-borne IED attacks.
“IEDs plague the people living in southern Afghanistan. They are constantly living under the threat of roadside bombs and vehicle-borne suicide attacks,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Taliban insurgents, like the one pursued last night, are responsible for the death and destruction caused by these weapons.”
The security force targeted a series of compounds north of the village of Davud Kheyl in Shah Joy district, to search for the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and then cleared the buildings. After questioning all the residents, the security force detained the suspected insurgents.
The assault force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children throughout the search.
