KABUL- An Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent in Kandahar province Thursday during an operation targeting a Taliban commander.
The commander equips Taliban fighters for improvised explosive devices and complex attacks against Afghan civilians, as well Afghan and coalition forces in Kandahar City. He also supplies weapons and IEDs for the Arghandab insurgent network.
The security force targeted a compound in Kandahar City in pursuit of the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker calling for all residents to exit the buildings. After clearing and securing the area, the security force detained the suspected insurgent.
"Afghan and coalition forces will continue maintaining a constant presence in and around the Kandahar province as they work toward stabilizing the area," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.
The assault force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
